Ectropion is the medical term used to describe sagging and outward turning of the lower eyelid and eyelashes. This can lead to excessive tearing, crusting of the eyelid, mucous discharge and irritation of the eye.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

Entropion is the medical term used to describe rolling inward of the lower eyelid and eyelashes towards the eyeball. The skin of the eyelid and the eyelashes rub against the cornea (the front part of the eye) and conjunctiva (the membrane that protects the eye). This rubbing can lead to excessive tearing, crusting of the eyelid, mucous discharge, foreign body sensation in the eye, irritation of the cornea and impaired vision.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

What causes Entropion or Entropions?<\/h3>\n\t

Most cases of ectropion and entropion are due to weakening of tissues and small muscles of the eyelid as a result of ageing. Some cases result from scarring of the eyelid caused by sun exposure, chemical\/thermal trauma, skin cancers or previous eye surgery.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

How is eyelid malposition treated?<\/h3>\n\t

Ectropion and entropion should be repaired surgically before there is any damage to the cornea (the front of the eye). Ectropion puts the eye at risk as the outward turning lid is unable to protect the surface; while entropion may cause harm as the eyelash rubs against the eyeball.<\/p>\n

The surgical technique to repair these condition depends on the cause of eyelid malposition and patient factors. It is customised to each individual patients eyelid condition and severity.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
